HMS Tara

SS Hibernia was built by William Denny and Brothers, Dumbarton, Scotland for the London and North Western Railway, entering service on the Holyhead to Ireland route in 1900.
In 1914 she was requisitioned by the Admiralty as an Armed Boarding Steamer and renamed HMS Tara. She operated out of Larne, Northern Ireland and Campbeltown, Scotland, patrolling the north passage between Scotland and Ireland for a year, covering more than 60,000 miles.

After service in the north Irish Sea she was transferred to the Mediterranean in October 1915, where she was eventually sunk by U-Boat on 5 November 1915.

Some of the individuals listed below died during the time when HMS Tara was employed as an Armed Boarding Steamer in British Waters. Others passed away after completing service on the ship prior to it transferring to the Mediterranean and were accepted for inclusion on the War Memorial because of this.
