Richard Roberts, Chief Steward

Richard Roberts, Chief Steward, Mercantile Marine, HMHS Anglia. Lost at sea due to enemy action, age 37, on 17 November 1915.

He was born at Holyhead on 26 April 1878 and joined the LNWR on the 16 May 1894, aged 16, in the clerical section of the Marine Department. In 1901 he was serving on the SS Rosstrevor as a Steward. In 1911, aged 32, he lived with his wife, Elizabeth Ellen Roberts (nee Marsh) (29) at 13 Roland Street, Holborn Road, Holyhead. They were married in about 1903. His wife originated from St. Anthony in Cornwall. Their children included William Hugh Roberts (8), Thomas Eric Roberts (3) and Catherine Evelyn Roberts (1).

He was employed as a Ships Steward for the LNWR. He completed 22 years service with the company and had been promoted to Chief Steward in 1913.

It is recorded that he lost his life after jumping from the Anglia in an attempt to reach a rescue boat. His watch stopped at 12.50. This was thought to be the time he entered the water. His body was recovered and brought home to Holyhead for burial. Of the crew, his was the only body recovered. Ellen, his wife, lived to the age of 95, dying in 1976.

Awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal.

Buried at Holyhead (Maeshyfryd) Burial Board Cemetery. Grave location 2.879. His grave inscription includes, "He gave his life for a friend".
