Richard Williams, Fireman

Richard Williams, Fireman, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara died, on 3 November 1916, aged 46, due to a collision at sea.

Born at Holyhead in about 1869 he was the husband of Elizabeth Williams (nee Williams). They married at Holyhead in around 1896. At the time of the disaster they were living at 23 Edmund Street, Holyhead with six children.In 1901 the family lived in a three roomed house at 7 Mill Street, Holyhead (later renamed Ucheldre Street) and comprised Richard Williams (32), a Railway Goods Porter, Elizabeth Williams (28), twins Lizzie and Maggie (4), Ellen (2) and Richard (1). All were born at Holyhead.

He joined the LNWR Marine Department on 29 October 1914 as a Fireman probably as a replacement for others on war service. He had been in the company employ for the previous 20 years.

His widow received compensation of an immediate payment of £12 and £3 per month.

His body was recovered for burial at Maeshyfryd Cemetery following a Parish Church service - Section A, Grave 31. The grave is unmarked.
