Andrew Morris, Chief Steward

Andrew Morris, Chief Steward, Mercantile Marine Reserve, HMS Tara. Died, age 58, 14 December 1917 at Glyn Garth, Holborn Road, Holyhead. Cause unknown.

In 1901, aged 41, he was recorded as living with his wife, Catherine Ann Morris (nee Taylor) (35) at Claremont House, London Road, Holyhead. His occupation is given as Ship's Steward. His wife originated from Bangor and they married there in 1898. At the same census he was also recorded as a Steward serving on SS Banshee, berthed at Holyhead Harbour. At the same time his parents, Lewis Morris (68), a retired Signalman from Longford, Ireland and Agnes Morris (64) from Dublin were living at Blenheim Cottage, London Road. Also residing at this address were his siblings, Lewis Morris (34), a Railway Guard and Agnes Morris (35). In 1911 his wife was residing at Glyn Garth, Holborn Road, Holyhead. They had no children.

He was a survivor of HMS Tara, when she was sunk by submarine in the Mediterranean Sea in November 1915 and survived four months of desert captivity in the hands of the Sennusi.

He was the brother of Joseph Augustine Morris, lost whilst serving on HMS Revenge in 1914. He was also the Uncle of Lewis Morris, Cheshire Regiment, lost on the Western Front in 1918.

He is not listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Debt of Honour Register. His omission may have been due to the nature of his demise not meeting the requirements for CWGC commemoration. The town considered this differently and has included his name on the Cenotaph War Memorial.

He is buried at Holyhead (St Mary's ) Roman Catholic Cemetery, Cleveland Avenue, Holyhead.
