Richard Owen, Fireman

Richard Owen, Fireman, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara died on 3 November 1916, aged 27 due to a collision at sea.

Born at Holyhead in about 1889, he was the husband of Margaret Ellen Owen (nee Owen). They married in the summer of 1915 at Holyhead. At the time of the tragedy they lived at 27 Thomas Street, which was the family house of his wife, together with a young child.In 1901 Richard (12) lived at home at 7 Back Jew Street, Holyhead with his father, William Owen, sister Margaret (22) and brother John (18). His father was employed as a Railway Collier and his brother as a Farm Cowman. In 1911 they had moved to 5 Millbank, Holyhead. Richard was then employed as part of the 'Shore Gang' at the LNWR Marine Department. He had been employed by the LNWR for seven years and had served 15 months on the HMHS Cambria.

His wife, Margaret, was awarded compensation of £4 a month.

His body was recovered for burial at Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead - Section 2, Grave 1485. The grave is unmarked.
