John Robert Jones, Able Seaman

John Robert Jones, Able Seaman, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara, died on 3 November 1916, aged 41 due to a collision at sea.

Born at Amlwch, Anglesey in 1875, the son of Henry Rowland Jones (Master Mariner) and Mary Owen Jones (Previously Owen, nee Jones). In 1891 he lived with his widowed mother and brother William at 11 Brick Pool Street, Amlwch Port, Anglesey. He was then 15 years of age and employed at a Tobacco Works. He married Elizabeth Farrell at Toxteth, Liverpool on 20 March 1899. They had four children - Elizabeth Jones (b. 1900), Mary Jones (b. 1902), William Farrell Jones (b. 1903) and Annie Jones (b. 1907). William had been employed as a Messenger at the LNWR Marine Yard, Holyhead before he died of influenza in 1918. His wife died in December 1943, aged 71.

In 1911 his wife and four children were living at 12 Ednyfed Hill, Amlwch Port. At the time of his death he was residing at Newry House*, Holyhead.

As compensation his wife, of Newry House, was granted a pension of £4 a month and an immediate payment of £7.

His body was recovered for burial at Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead - Section 2. Grave 1531. The grave also contains the remains of his wife, Elizabeth Farrell Jones. The headstone is a modern replacement/addition.
