Albert Frederick Ashton, Cabin Boy

Albert Frederick Ashton, Cabin Boy, Mercantile Marine, HMHS Anglia. Lost at sea due to enemy action, aged 19, on 17 November 1915.

He was born at Holyhead in 1896. In 1911 the family lived at Beckley House, Station Street, Holyhead. His father, Frederick Ashton (70) was a retired Railway Guard originating from Bunbury, Cheshire. His mother Annie Charlotte Ashton (nee Barton) (39) was born in Holyhead. Siblings included Percy (12), Violet Roberta (11) and Daisy (4). They were all born in Holyhead. His parents married at Holyhead in 1893. In 1911 Albert was employed as a Grocer's Assistant. In 1901 the family lived at "The Ards", Roberts Street, Holyhead. His father died in 1916 aged 72. His mother later lived at 9 High Terrace, Holyhead and died in 1957, aged 85.

His father had married previously (Susan/Susannah Davies in 1863 at Bangor) and had five children - Alfred (b.1864), Thomas John (b.1866), Herbert (b.1868), Walter (b.1872) and Elizabeth (b.1878). His first wife died at Holyhead in 1892, aged 53.

Awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal.

Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
