Stanislaus M J Cooke, Steward

Stanislaus Marrianna Josephus Cooke, Under Steward, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara, died on 3 November 1916, aged 17, due to a collision at sea.

He was born at West Derby, Liverpool on 1 May 1899 and was the son of William and Elizabeth Ada Cooke (nee Aris). His parents married at Brighton in 1894. In 1911 the family lived at 2 Kings Road, Holyhead and comprised William Cooke (49) born at Leicester, a Newsagent; Elizabeth Ada Cooke (50), born at Northampton, employed as an assistant in her husband's business; W T A Cooke (15), employed as a Messenger Boy at the Marine Department, Holyhead and Stanislaus (Stanley) M J Cooke (11). Also at the house was a boarder, Jacob Francis Cornish (47), an Photographic Artist. At a later date the family also lived at Penrhyn, London Road, Holyhead.

They were a Roman Catholic family. Stanislaus had served as a Choirboy in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Holyhead. In 1901 the family had lived at Bolton, Lancashire where William was an Insurance Agent and his wife was a Schoolmistress.

His body was returned to Holyhead on the SS Galtee More and he was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Holyhead.

The grave also contains the remains of his mother, Elizabeth Ada Cooke, who died in 1926 and his father, William Cooke, who died in 1927. Also buried in a separate grave at the same cemetery are his bother William T A Cooke (1895-1948) and his sister Ada M T Cooke (1901-1987).
