Owen Thomas Williams, Fireman

Owen Thomas Williams, Fireman, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara died, on 3 November 1916, aged 40, due to a collision at sea.

He was born at Amlwch (workhouse?) and grew up at Cemaes (Llanbadrig), Anglesey with grandparents. He is recorded in the 1881 Census as living at Gwyddelyn, Llanbadrig (a farm of 40 acres), aged 5, with his grandparents, Owen (76) and Ellen Williams (71). He is then recorded as being born at Llanbadrig. In 1891 he is living at the same location with Thomas Williams (43), a Farmer and his wife Ann Williams (50). He is then 15 years old and recorded as the son of Thomas and Ann. Thomas may actually have been his uncle who has inherited the farm from his parents.

At the time of his death he and his wife, Margaret, had six children, four of these from a previous marriage, and lived at 13 Baker Street, Holyhead. He married Margaret Parry at Tabor Chapel, Valley, Anglesey in 1914. They went on to have two children - Louisa and Ellen Jane Williams.

He had served in the Cheshire Regiment in India for 14 years, joining the LNWR in about 1914. He was a great friend of Isaac Woodhall, also lost on the Connemara. He is believed to have been called out to replace another Stoker who had reported sick. His wife was granted compensation of £3 a month.

His body was never recovered for burial.

With thanks to Malcolm Thomas for the photograph of his grandfather and additional information.
