Owen John Jones, 2nd Steward

Owen John Jones, 2nd Steward, Mercantile Marine, RMS Leinster. Died at sea, aged 48, as a result of enemy action on 10 October 1918 in the Irish Sea.

Born at Holyhead on 17 September 1870, the son of Richard Jones and Elizabeth Roberts. He was the husband of G Sally Jones of 5 Roberts Street, Holyhead.

In 1891 he was a lodger resident at 31 North Penrallt Street, Llanbeblig, the home of the Salisbury family. He was then employed as a Grocer's Assistant. In 1901 he was recorded as a 3rd Steward on board RMS Munster at Dublin.

He married his first wife Margaret Ellen Stanley at Bangor on 4 January 1897. Twin daughters Gwadlys Mary Jones and Gwynedd Elizabeth Jones were born at Bangor later that year. Another daughter Lilian Stanley Jones was born in Holyhead on 15 February 1903. His wife died on 13 February 1910, aged 39, at 3 Tower Gardens, Holyhead. In 1911 his twin daughters lived at 3 Tower Gardens, Holyhead with a Housekeeper, Margaret A Jones. Their father was not present at the house for the Census. His youngest daughter lived with her widowed grandmother, Eliza Jones at 2 Stanley Row, Holyhead. In 1919 his daughters, Gwynedd and Lilian resided at Corrig Avenue, Kingstown, Ireland.

He was awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and the British War Medal.

Buried at Maeshyfryd Cemetery Holyhead, grave location 2.1553. Also included in the Masonic Roll of Honour.
