Evan William Jones, Kings Liverpool Regiment

Private, 73506, 26th Infantry Labour Company, Kings (Liverpool Regiment), later transferred as Private, 54057, 91st Company Labour Corps. Died, aged 21, on 18 May 1918 at the Western Front.

The Labour Corps was raised in 1915 and disbanded in 1921.The Corps grew to some 389,900 men (more than 10% of the total size of the Army) by the Armistice. The Corps was manned by officers and other ranks who had been medically rated below the "A1" condition needed for front line service. Many were returned wounded. Labour Corps units were often deployed for work within range of the enemy guns, sometimes for lengthy periods. In April 1917, a number of Infantry Battalions were transferred to the Corps. In the crises of March and April 1918 on the Western Front, Labour Corps Units were used as emergency infantry. The men who died are commemorated under their original Regiment, with Labour Corps being secondary.

Born at Holyhead, the son of Aaron and Ellen Jones (nee Thomas) of 5 Longford Terrace, Holyhead. In 1901 he lived at 5 Longford Terrace, Holyhead with his parents and brothers, James David (7) and Hugh Thomas (5 months). His father was born in Holyhead and was employed as a Railway Engine Driver. His mother originated from Gwalchmai, Holyhead. In 1911 the family resided at the same address. His elder brother, James David was employed as a Surgery Clerk. Private Jones originally enlisted at Holyhead.

Awarded the Victory Medal and British War Medal.
