Albert Evan Dowding, Anson Battalion, RN Division

Able Seaman, R/5065, RNVR, Anson Battalion, RN Division. Killed in action, aged 32, on 02 September 1918 at the Western Front during the Battle of Drocourt-Queant (Second and final phase of Second Battle of Arras).

Joined the Army Reserve on 29 November 1915. Entered 12 July 1917 and joined the BEF draft, Anson Battalion on 12 November 1917. Suffered slight wound to right eye 18 November 1917. Rejoined Anson Battalion on 01 January 1918. Suffered cellulites 10 February to 24 March 1918. Rejoined Anson Bttn. 12 April 1918.

Born 29 March 1885 at Holyhead. Resided at Foundry Street, Holyhead. Husband of Ellen Mary Dowding (nee Jones) of 23 Tank Row, Longsight, Manchester. Married at Chorlton, Manchester in 1914. They had a daughter, Mary W Dowding, born in 1914 at Manchester. His wife remarried John Phillips at Manchester in 1920. Son of Albert and Jane Dowding (nee Davies). Father was a Coastguard Boatman. Mother originated from Holyhead. In 1901 family resided in Sandgate, Kent where Albert Evan, age 15, was employed as an errand boy in the port. In 1911 he was still residing in Sandgate with his widowed mother and was employed as a Liftman at an Hotel, aged 25.

Awarded the Victory Medal and British War Medal.
