Griffith Jones, Welsh Regiment

Private Griffith Jones, 202718, 9th (Service) Battalion, Welsh Regiment. Died, aged 25, on 24 November 1917 at the Western Front.

The Battalion was formed at Cardiff on 9 September 1914 as part of K2. It moved to Salibsury Plain and was attached to 58th Brigade, 19th (Western) Division. They were in billets in Basingstoke in November 1914. They then moved to Weston-Super-Mare in January 1915 and then on to Perham Down in May 1915. The Battalion landed at Boulogne mid July 1915.

Born at Holyhead, the son of William and Ellen Jones of 1 Pentre Canol, Mountain, Holyhead. In 1901 he lived at Pentre Canol, Mountain, Holyhead with his parents, William (52) and Ellen Jones (43) together with brothers, Robert (7), John (4), Lewis (2) and sisters, Ann (11) and Maggie (8 months). His father was employed as a Farm Labourer and came from Llanddeusant, Anglesey. His mother also originated from the same village. In 1911 he was living at Ty Mawr Farm, Penrhosfeilw, Holyhead, where he was employed by the Farmer William Williams as a Farm Labourer, aged 18.

The Battalion had recently been involved in the tough fighting and horrific conditions of the Second Battle of Passchendaele (26 October - 10 November 1917). Records show that he died of Dysentery, probably at one of the Casualty Clearing Stations at Outtersteene/Bailleul. The 2nd, 53rd and 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Stations were located there in 1917.

Awarded the Victory Medal and British War Medal.

Buried in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France. Grave located at II.C.2.
