George Edward Williams, Chief Engineer
George Edward Williams, Chief Engineer, Mercantile Marine, HMHS Anglia. Lost at sea due to enemy action, age 57, on 17 November 1915.
He was born at Four Mile Bridge, Anglesey on 20 January 1857. In 1871 he was living at Rhoscolyn, Anglesey and was employed at a Blacksmiths, aged 14. In 1881, aged 24, he was lodging at his Aunt Ellen Edward's house at 1 Swift Square, Holyhead with his sister, Ellen Williams (25). He was then employed as an Engine Fitter for the LNWR. He served his apprenticeship at the LNWR Marine Department, joining in April 1875. He was promoted to Chief Engineer for the LNWR in August 1896.
He married Elizabeth Ann Fraser (born at Cardiff) at Capel Moriah, Caernarfon on 23 September 1884 and in 1901 the family lived at 23 Newry Street, Holyhead. They had a son, Archibald Williams (15) and a daughter Catherine (11). He was then employed as a Marine Engineer. His wife, known as Elizabeth Fraser-Williams, died, aged 49, at Dublin in March 1909 following an operation. She was a Music Teacher and an accomplished singer and musician. She was buried at Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead. At the time of her death her husband was Chief Engineer on SS Connemara. Their son, Archibald Fraser Williams (d. 1943), also served as a Marine Engineer.
In 1913 he married Emily Wynn Roberts at Birkenhead. At the time of his death it is believed that they were living at Holyroad, 13 Plashyfryd Terrace, Holyhead. His wife later lived at Sylvan, Cae Sand, Bontnewydd, Carnarvon. She was granted administration of his will to a value of £125.17s.6d.
He was awarded the Mercantile Medal and British War Medal.
Commemorated on Tower Hill Memorial. Also commemorated on a memorial plaque at Armenia Chapel (now demolished).
