Hugh Jones, Chief Engineer

Hugh Jones, Chief Engineer, RNR, SS Connemara, died on 3 November 1916, age 41, due to a collision at sea.

Born at Holyhead on 9 May 1875, he was the son of Henry and Jane Jones. In 1891 the family lived at 12 Lower Park Street, Holyhead and comprised Henry Jones (51) - a Shipwright, Jane Jones (45), John Henry Jones (24) - a Ship's Steward, Mary Jones (22), Elizabeth Jones (18), Hugh Jones (15) and Henry Jones (13). In 1901 it would appear that his parents had passed away and he was living with his siblings, Mary, Henry and Elizabeth at 12 Lower Park Street. His brother Henry was now a Railway Timekeeper and Hugh was a Marine Engineer. Henry was later to become Vice-Chaiman of the Local Authority.

He married Esther Fisher in 1913/14. A daughter Eunice was born at Holyhead in August 1916. His wife died in June 1965, aged 83, and his daughter passed away in January 2010, aged 93. All are buried in the same grave at Maeshyfryd.

At the time of his death he was living at 13 Moreton Road, Holyhead. He had joined the LNWR in September 1896 after completing an engineering apprenticeship. He volunteered for active service at the outbreak of war and was Second Engineer on HMS Tara. He was prevented to sail with her to the Mediterranean in October 1915 due to illness. He was promoted to Chief Engineer in November 1915 and remained at Holyhead.

His wife, Esther, was awarded compensation of £240 to be invested in the War Loan.

His body was recovered for burial at Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead - Section 2, Grave 1441.
