Frederick Henry Jones

Private, 81002 (43964), 2nd (Garrison) Battalion, Kings (Liverpool Regiment), killed in action, aged 19, on 27 February 1917 at the Macedonia/Salonika Front of the Balkan Theatre of War.

The 2nd Garrison Battalion was formed at Pembroke Dock in November 1915 and then moved to Egypt in March 1916. The Battallion transfered to Salonika in January 1917, serving as part of Headquaters/Lines of Communication troops. It was later attached on 28 August 1917 to 228th Brigade, 28th Division.

Born at Heneglwys on 18 December 1896, the son of Robert and Ann Jones (nee Hughes). He enlisted at Wrexham in September 1916 having been previously employed on a farm at Penrhosfeilw, Holyhead. In 1911 the family lived at Glanwy Morfa, Valley, Anglesey and comprised Robert (37), Ann (39), Frederick Henry (13) and sister Christina Ellen (10). His father Robert was employed as a Groom Gardener. All were recorded as born at Bodedern, Anglesey. At the time of Private Jones' death the family were living at 28 Blackbridge, Holyhead.

From the Holyhead Chronicle of 30 March 1917: ‘Official news has been received that Private Fred Jones only son of Mr and Mrs Robert Jones, Blackbridge (Late of Bodedern) has been killed in action. The deceased who was only 19 years of age was attached to The Kings Liverpool Regiment and joined the forces in September last. Prior to this he was engaged on a farm at Penrhosfeilw.’

Awarded the Victory Medal and British War Medal.
