William Edward Gibson Bassett, Seaman

William Edward Gibson Bassett, Seaman, Mercantile Marine, HMHS Anglia. Lost at sea due to enemy action, aged 47, on 17 November 1915.

In 1901 the family lived at 5 Station Street, Holyhead and included William Bassett (34), Seaman, born at Torpoint, Cornwall in 1868. His wife was Frances (nee Williams) (34). His children were William Edward Bassett (born at Mellbrook, Cornwall) (9), Maggie M Bassett (8), Jennie Bassett (6), Florry Maud Basset (4), Frederick Francis Bassett (6 months). At this time Frances' mother Mary Williams (80) lived with the family.
In 1911 the family still lived at the same address and now included George Henry Bassett (5) and Violet Bassett (2). William married Frances at Holyhead in 1897. Their son Frederick Francis died later in 1901. Their daughter Florence Maud died in 1919, aged 21. His father and mother were Edward and Margaret Bassett. In 1881 he was a pupil, aged 13, at Greenwich Hospital School (a school for children of naval personnel).
In 1891 he was recorded as a married crew member, aged 23, on HMS Neptune at Devonport. Records show that between 1887 and 1893 HMS Neptune was stationed at Holyhead as the Coastguard ship for the 1st Class Reserve. He commenced his employment with the LNWR Company in November 1891.

Awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal.

Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. Also remembered on a family grave at Holyhead (Maeshyfryd) Burial Board Cemetery.
