Louis Jones, Royal Welsh Fusiliers

Private, 2279, 1/6th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Died, aged 27, on 17 September 1915 at St. David's Hospital, Malta from Dysentery resulting from service at Gallipoli at the Balkans Theatre of War.

The Battalion was formed in August 1914 in Caernarvon as part of the North Wales Brigade, Welsh Division. On 13 May 1915 the formation became the 158th Brigade, 53rd (Welsh) Division. It sailed on 19 July 1915 for Gallipoli, going via Imbros and disembarking at Suvla Bay on 9 August 1915. In December 1915 the Division was evacuated from Gallipoli and moved to Egypt. On 3 August 1918 the Battalion amalgamated with 1/5th Battalion to form the 5/6th Battalion.

He entered the Balkans Theatre of War on 8 August 1915 and landed at Sulva Bay, Gallipoli on 9 August 1915. The action at Sulva Bay was an attempt to force a breakout and attack the Turkish forces in the rear. The attack failed and a stalemate ensued. Conditions led to much illness and disease, mostly dysentry, amongst the troops. It is probable that Private Jones fell ill and was evacuated to hospital at Malta, where he died.

His father was from Holyhead and was employed as a Greengrocer and Fruiterer. His mother originated from Caernarvon. In 1911 the family still resided at the same address. His father was employed as a General Dealer. His two elder brothers were employed as Stewards. He was employed as a Goods Porter for the LNWR.
