Nathaniel Joseph Campbell, Purser

Nathaniel Joseph Campbell, Purser, Mercantile Marine, HMHS Anglia. Lost at sea due to enemy action, aged 37, on 17 November 1915.

In 1911 the family lived at the Forester's Arms, Holyhead and included Nathaniel Campbell (33), born in Holyhead and his wife Agnes Gwendoline Campbell (nee Williams) (34), born in Holyhead. He was a Wine and Spirit Merchant. They were married in Fylde, Lancashire in 1908. In 1911 they had one child, Eileen (1) (b.1909). They were later to have two further children, Leonard F Campbell (b.1912) and Kenneth C Campbell (b.1913). Nathaniel Campbell was a Town Councillor who had previously seen military service in South Africa during the Boer War with the 34th Company Imperial Yeomanry.

Nathaniel Campbell was born at Holyhead in 1878, the son of Joseph and Ellen Campbell who originated from Ireland. His father was a Cattle Dealer and in 1881 they lived at Old Station, Holyhead. In the family at that time were Margaret (20), Catherine (16), Bridget (13), Lucy (8), Joseph (5) and Nathaniel (3). They also employed 2 servants.

He joined the Anglia in August 1914 when she served as a fleet messenger. At the time of his death the Campbell family resided at Bryn Awel, Penrhosfeilw, Holyhead. In his will he left £1128.14s to his widow.

He was awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal.

His body was not recovered. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. He is also remembered on Ireland's Memorial Record 1914-1918.
