Leslie Benjamin Nicklin, 3rd Officer

Leslie Benjamin Nicklin, Third Officer, Maritime Marine, RMS Leinster. Died as a result of enemy action, age 31, on 10 October 1918 in the Irish Sea.

He was born at Smethwick (King's Norton), Staffordshire in 1886 and registered as Benjamin Leslie Nicklin. He was the son of Benjamin Nicklin and the late Clara A Nicklin and the husband of Athena Alexandra Nicklin (nee Henri/Henry). They married at Glasgow in August 1915. He lived with his wife at 6 Park Street, Holyhead. In 1901 he lived with his parents at 94 Bearwood Hill, Smethwick, age 14 and was employed as a Commercial Clerk. His father was a Sheet Iron Worker. He had gained his 1st Mate certificate in December 1912 and Master's Certificate in August 1915, both at Glasgow (Cert. No.006866). His wife remarried to John C Thomas at Newport in 1932. She died at Southampton in June 1981.Awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal.
