William Henry Callaway, Steward

William Henry Callaway, Steward, Mercantile Marine, HMHS Anglia. Lost at sea due to enemy action, aged 23, on 17 November 1915.

He was the son of Charles Edward (Edwin) Calloway and the late Lucy Dorcas Callaway (nee Inkpen) of 2 Wian Street, Holyhead.

In 1901 the family lived at the Coastguard Station, Amlwch and included his father Charles Callaway (34) from Portsmouth, employed as a Coastguard RN. His mother was Lucy Dorcas Callaway (nee Inkpen) (33) from Portsmouth. Also there was William Henry (8), born at Borcastle, Cornwall and his brother Charles Fredrick (10), born at Portsmouth.

In 1911 his father was living at 2 Wian Street, Holyhead and was a Naval Pensioner (44), employed as a Boatman for the LNWR, Holyhead. His wife, Lucy, was staying at her brother's house at 33, Walpole Road, Teddington, Surrey. She died later in 1911, aged 44.

He joined the LNWR in May 1908 and in 1911 Census William Henry Callaway was Steward, aged 18, on board SS Scotia at Dublin.

Commemorated on the Tower Memorial. Also remembered on a family grave at Holyhead (Maeshyfryd) Burial Board Cementery.
