Edward Cartwright, Coal Trimmer

Edward Cartwright, Coal Trimmer/Stoker, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara died, on 3 November 1916, age 68 due to a collision at sea.

He was born at Ellesmere, near Shrewsbury, Shropshire and appears to have been brought up by his grandparents. In 1861 he was employed as a Servant to a Butcher at Cockshutt, Shropshire when aged 14. He married Mary Elizabeth Jones, probably at Coedna, Anglesey in 1877. In 1911 the family lived at 3 York Terrace, Holyhead and comprised Edward Cartwright (63) - Stoker, Mary Elizabeth Cartwright (62), Emma Cartwright (33) (S) - School Teacher and Pollie (Mary) Cartwright (31) (S). There were two other daughters recorded on previous census - Elizabeth (b. about 1874) and Alice (b. about 1876). There may have been another daughter, Nora (b. about 1882). The family had previously lived at 4 Millbank Gardens (1891) and Millbank Terrace (1881).His wife was awarded compensation of £10 forthwith and £3 a month.

His body was never recovered for burial.
