Owen Williams, Carpenter

Owen Williams, Carpenter, Mercantile Marine Reserve, HMS Tara. Died at sea due to enemy action, age 60, on 5 November 1915.

He was the son of John and Elizabeth Williams of Erw Wen, Newborough, Bodorgan, Anglesey and the husband of Margaret Williams (nee Lewis?) of Glendale, Gilbert Street, Holyhead. His father originated from Newborough and was also a Ship's Carpenter. His mother came from Amlwch.

In 1911, aged 54, he lived with his wife, aged 51, at 14 Gilbert Street, Holyhead. They married about 1883 and had two children, John Owen Williams (b. about 1885) and Ellen Williams (b. about 1887). His wife originated from Holyhead.

He was sadly killed in the water whilst struggling to reach a lifeboat. He was hit on the head by a meat safe that fell from the ship as it listed.

He had served the LNWR Marine Department for 23 years.

Awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
