Robert Griffith, Steward

Robert Griffith(s), Steward, Merchantile Marine Reserve, HMS Cambria. Died 6 November 1914, of illness, aged 30 at Scapa Flow, Scotland.

Born at Holyhead on 12 December 1883, he was the youngest son of the late Robert Griffith and Mrs Ellen Griffith (nee Corbett) of 16 Thomas Street, Holyhead. In 1911 his mother Ellen Griffith (61) and sister, Elizabeth Griffith (25) were resident at 16 Thomas Street, Holyhead. His mother was a widow, who originated from Ramsey, IOM. His sister Elizabeth was employed as a Dressmaker. He also had a brother, Hugh (b.1877) and sister Annie (b.1880). All were born at Holyhead.

He joined the LNWR on 2 January 1900, aged 16 and had been in their service for almost fifteen years. Information gained suggests that he may have died of Diphtheria on the hospital ship HMHS China.

He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, Victory Medal and British War Medal.

Buried at Osmondwall Cemetery, Hoy - grave reference "in old ground between the gates", where his shipmates from the Cambria erected a gravestone in his memory.
