George Herbert Doeg, Commander

George Herbert Doeg, Commander, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara, died on 3 November 1916, age 51, due to a collision at sea.

George Herbert Doeg was born on 20 December 1865 at Carlisle, Cumberland. He was christened on 28 Jan 1866 at St. Cuthbert, Carlisle, Cumberland, England. He was the son of Charles Edward Doeg and Fanny Doeg (nee Robinson). His father was a Pianoforte Dealer and in 1881 G H Doeg was employed as a Solicitor's Clerk at Carlisle. By 1891 he had gone to sea and was recorded as a Mariner residing at "Glenside", Caternham, Surry with his aunt Emily Davies and family. He married Mary Josephine Haughton in Ireland on 7 September 1897. She was the daughter of Joseph and Maria Haughton (nee Robson) and was born on 4 June 1867 at Carlisle.He achieved his 1st Mate's Certificate (No. 023746) in 1891; his Master's Certificate in 1894 and his Foreign Service Master's Certificate in 1896. He commenced his employment with the LNWR on 1 April 1896 as Second Mate. He was promoted to Commander on 24 August 1914. Previous to that he was serving as Chief Officer on SS Cambria. He lived with his wife at Tan Allttran, Holyhead. He was known to be an accomplished musician and was for many years conductor of the local Orchestral Society.

On his death his brother Reginald Arthur Doeg, a Bank Inspector, was granted probate of his effects of £2961 8s 6d. His wife died at Tan Alltran, Holyhead on 6 December 1918, aged 51. They had no children. Both he and his wife were Quakers.

He is buried at The Society Of Friends Burial Ground, Temple Hill, Blackrock, Dublin.
