George Owen, 2nd Engineer

George Owen, 2nd Engineer, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara, died on 3 November 1916, age 35, due to a collision at sea.

Born at Holyhead on 18 March 1881 to William and Mary Jane Owen. In 1901 the family lived at 45 Newry Street, Holyhead when his father was employed as a Marine Engineer. He had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He commenced a Fitting Apprenticeship at the Marine Department, Holyhead on 3 March 1897 and would have completed this in 1902.

In 1906 he married Margaret Jane Evans (Megan Cybi) at Holyhead, the daughter of Isaac and Mary Evans of Bodafon, London Road. She was a renowned singer who appeared at many concerts both locally and at other towns of north Wales. They had a child, Megan, born in 1909 but died in 1937 aged 28. His wife died in 1946, aged 69. At the time of the disaster the family lived at 64 London Road, Holyhead.

Administration of his will was granted to his wife for the sum of £165.10s. His wife received compensation of £10 forthwith and £3 a month.

His body was recovered for burial at Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead - Section 2, Grave 938. The grave also contains the remains of his wife, parents-in-law and daughter.
