Griffith Williams, Greaser

Griffith Williams, Greaser, Mercantile Marine, RMS Leinster. Lost at sea, aged 49, as a result of enemy action in the Irish Sea on 10 October 1918.

Born at Holyhead the son of Hugh Williams and Lettice Williams (nee Owen) of Llanynhenedl, Anglesey. He was the husband of Margaret Ellen Williams of 4 Gilbert Street, Holyhead. They married in about 1898 and in 1911 they lived at 1 Henry Street, Holyhead. The family then consisted of Griffith Williams (41), employed as a Fireman for the CDSPCo, Margaret Ellen Williams (33) (nee Jones), Ellen Williams (11), Elizabeth Williams (9), Maggie Williams (7), Gwladys Williams (7) and Hugh Griffith Williams (1). Hugh Griffith was to die on 4 April 1911 and is buried with his parents in the family grave. His wife died in 1947 aged 70.

Griffith Williams joined the CDSPCo in December 1917. His son Owen Richard Williams (b. 1898) served with the South Wales Borderers.

Awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal.

Buried in a family grave at Holyhead (Maeshyfryd) Burial Board Cemetery, grave location 2.28.
