Michael Flaherty, Able Seaman

Michael Flaherty, Seaman, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara, died on 3 November 1916, aged about 23, due to a collision at sea.

Michael Flaherty was born at Cemaes, Anglesey the son of Coleman and Delia Flaherty, both from Galway, Ireland. In 1901 the family lived at 29 Cecil Street, Holyhead and comprised Coleman Flaherty (45), Delia Flaherty (36), Norah (15), Delia (9), Michael (6), James (5), Anthony (3), George (1) and Mary (1). His father was employed as a Seaman for the LNWR. At the time of Michael's birth he was serving as a Coastguard Boatman at Amlwch. He had previously served on the Guard Ship, HMS Neptune at Holyhead.

His father died at Holyhead in 1910 and in 1911 the family still resided at 29 Cecil Street, where his mother is recorded as being employed as a Midwife. She died in 1947 aged 85. At the time of the 1911 Census he was employed as a Deckboy on the LNWR vessel SS Rathmore.

He was unmarried and at the time of his death was residing with his mother at 29 Cecil Street, Holyhead.

His mother, who had been keeping house for him, was awarded £15 forthwith and £2.10s a month.

Michael Flaherty is believed to be buried at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Holyhead. The grave appears to be unmarked or has decayed beyond recognition.
