Henry Hughes, HMT Red Rose

Stoker, HMT Red Rose. Lost at sea 22 May 1918 aged 38.

HMT (SS) Red Rose was a British Cargo Steamer (Coaster) of 423 tons built in 1891 by John Fullerton & Company, Paisley, Yard No 94 for Richard Hughes & Co., Liverpool. In 1895 she was purchased by the Red Rose Steamship Company (R. Hughes). On the 21/22 May 1918 she went missing in the English Channel on route from Littlehampton to Le Havre with government stores. It is thought that she was torpedoed by the Submarine UB 57 about 30 miles NW of Cape Antifer. There were 10 others who lost their lives, including four from Amlwch, Anglesey.Son of Margaret Hughes and the late Henry Hughes; husband of Elizabeth Hughes (nee Parry), of 15 Field Street, Holyhead. Born at Llandyrnog, Denbighshire, the son of a farmer. In 1901 he was living at home with his parents and older sister in the parish of Cefn near Wrexham, Denbighshire where he was employed as a labourer in a Brickworks. In 1911 he lived at 15 Field Street, Holyhead with his wife and was employed as a Goods Porter for the LNWR at Holyhead. At this time they had no children but when he died he left behind a widow and two young children.Commemorated on Tower Hill, Memorial, London. Also commemorated on the Llandynog War Memorial and on a memorial plaque at Hyfrydle Chapel, Thomas Street, Holyhead.
