John Hughes, Luggage Guard

John Hughes, Luggage Guard, SS Connemara, died on 3 November 1916, aged 46 due to a collision at sea.

Born at Ty Croes, Anglesey in about 1870 and in 1911 lived at 9 Queen's Terrace, Holyhead with his wife Anne Hughes (nee Williams) (41), Owen John Hughes (11), Evan Hughes (9), Anne May Hughes (6) and Gwadys (2). At this time he was employed as a Railway Goods Checker with the LNWR. He had previously worked as a Railway Shunter and had been in the employment of the LNWR for 31 years. He had been promoted to Luggage Guard two years previously.

He and his wife married at Holyhead in 1893. She originated from Valley, Anglesey. They had six children in total. His eldest son William Hugh Hughes was killed whilst serving with the Anson Battalion, RN Division in 1917.

His wife, Annie, died in 1948 aged 78 whilst living at 7 Cambria Street.

His body was recovered for burial at Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead - Section A, Grave 186. His date of death is given mistakenly as 3 November 1917.
