Hugh Jones, SS Siddons

Leading Seaman, 4032A, RNR, SS Siddons. Died of illness, aged 30, on 18 October 1917.

SS Siddons was a Lamport and Holt steamship of 4,189 tons operating mainly out of Liverpool. In 1923 it was sold to R. J. Thomas, Cardiff and renamed SS Cambrian Maid and broken up in 1932.Born 5 July 1887 at Holyhead. Son of Mesach and Hannah Jones. Husband of Mrs Margaret Matheson (re-married) of 7 Edmund Street, Holyhead. In 1901 he lived with mother and brothers, Mesach (age 21)  and Richard (age 18), at 9 Jew Street, Holyhead. Hugh was employed (age 13) as a Newsagent's Messenger.  In 1911 he was living with his brother Mesach and his family at 39 Cedar Street, Bootle, Liverpool and employed as an AB Seaman. His wife married John N Matheson at Holyhead at the end of 1918.He enlisted in the RNR on 10 January 1912. In the same year he served on SS Celtic on voyages to New York. He then joined the LNWR at Holyhead and served on local ships until called up at declaration of war. He died of malaria at Belmont Hospital, Liverpool.Awarded the 1914-15 Star, Victory Medal and British War Medal. (His medals were sold at auction in 2005).

Buried at Holyhead (Maeshyfryd) Burial Board Cemetery, location 2.18. CWGC gravestone. The grave also contains the remains of his parents, Mesach and Hannah Jones.
