George Mathews Cox, Artificer

George Mathews Cox, Artificer/Boilermaker, Mercantile Marine Reserve, HMS Tara. Died of illness, age 57, on 5 January 1916 at Bir Hakeim in the Libyan Desert whilst interned by the Sennusi.

Born at Holyhead on 1 February 1858, the son of John and Mary Cox. His father was a Seaman, who originated from Hastings, Sussex (possibly born at Poona, India). George married Mary Catherine Jones at Holyhead Registry Office on 10 May 1888. At that time he was living at 14 Well Street, Holyhead. 

In 1911 he was living with his family at Arvon House, 3 Cybi Street, Holyhead. He commenced employment at the LNWR Marine Department as an Apprentice Boilermaker in 1871. The 1911 Census records George Mathew Cox (53), employed as a Boilermaker for the LNWR Company, Mary Catherine Cox (49), John Mathew Cox (21) - Boilermaker (LNWR), George Mathew Cox (17) - Labourer Iron Work, Richard Cox (15), Beatrice Cox (14), Edward Richard Cox (12), William Meredith Cox (8), Catherine Ellen Cox (22), John Francis Chorlton (22) employed as a Carter and originating from Bradford - married to Catherine Ellen Cox. Mary Catherine Cox died in 1913 aged 50. 

The family had earlier lived at 8 Park Street, Holyhead and 18 Lower Park Street, Holyhead. His son, George, volunteered for service with the Royal Anglesey Royal Engineers on 1 September 1914 but was declared unfit for military service three weeks later due to him suffering from Asthma.

The registered next of kin was his daughter, Catherine Elizabeth Chorlton, 7 Wynne Street, Holyhead.
