Richard Evans, Stoker

Richard Evans, Stoker, RNR, HMS Tara. Died, age 48, on 13 December 1914 at a hospital at Larne, Northern Ireland as a result of illness or accident.

Born at Holyhead the son of William and Anne Evans (nee Williams) of 35 Porthyfelin, Holyhead. He was the husband of Sophia Evans (nee Hughes) of Menai Bridge, Anglesey. They married in 1889 at Menai Bridge. They had six children - Annie (b.1890), Mary Elizabeth (b.1895), William John (b. 1897), Ebenezer (b.1900), Albert (b.1903) and Sophie (b.1905).In 1901 the family resided at 8 Tower Gardens, Holyhead.

In 1911 Sophia Evans was residing at 6 New Street, Menai Bridge with five of her children - William John, Ebenezer, Albert, Sophie and Mary Elizabeth. She is recorded as still married. The family is also known to have lived at 4 Tower Gardens, Holyhead at some time.

Stoker Evans is also thought to have served on HMS Anglia. He is known to have served on the LNWR ships for more than 30 years.

He is not listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Debt of Honour Register. His omission may have been due to the nature of his demise not meeting the requirements for CWGC commemoration. The town may have considered this differently and has included his name on the Memorial.

His body was returned to Holyhead and is believed to be buried at St. Seiriol's Church Cemetery, being buried on 18 December 1914.
