John Jones, Greaser

John Jones, Greaser, Mercantile Marine, RMS Leinster. Died at sea, aged 37, as a result of enemy action in the Irish Sea on 10 October 1918.

Born at Holyhead he was the son of the late Evan and Jane Jones and the husband of Alice Jones (nee Eaton) of 41 Cecil Street, London Road, Holyhead. They married at Holyhead in 1902. She was born at Llandudno and was the sister of Samuel Edward Eaton, killed whilst serving with the RWF at the Western Front in January 1917.

In 1911 the family lived at 9 Cecil Street, Holyhead. the Census recorded Alice Jones (30), Joseph Evan Jones (6), Lily Jones (4), Samuel (3) and Alice Eaton Jones (2). The Census form also included a deleted entry for Jane Ann Jones (4months). His wife died in 1945, aged 65.

It is known that his wife, Alice, was pregnant with twins at the time of her husband's death. Only one baby survived birth.

Awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and British War Medal.

He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial and remembered on a family grave at Holyhead (Maeshyfryd) Burial Board Cemetery.
