Richard Lewis Phillips, Engineer Sub-Lieutenant, RNR

Richard Lewis Phillips, Engineer Sub-Lieutenant, RNR, HMS Tara. Lost at sea as a result of enemy action, age 38, on 5 November 1915 in the Mediterranean Sea.

He was the husband of Anne Phillips (nee Pritchard) of Forcer Hill, Holborn Road, Holyhead. In 1911 the family lived at Hwyn Celyn, Plashyfryd Terrace, Holyhead. At the address were Richard Lewis Phillips (33), a Marine Engineer for the LNWR, Anne Phillips (nee Pritchard) (29), Magwen Phillips (9), Gwilym Richard Phillips (6), Helena Crystal Phillips (3), Glynne Phillips (2) and Robert Gerard Phillips (8 months). In all he had six children.

Born on 30 September 1877, Richard originated from Penrhyndeudraeth, Merionethshire. He was the son of William and Mary Phillips. His father was employed as an Engine Fitter and was also born in Penrhyndeudraeth. Richard and Anne married at Holyhead in 1904.

In his will he left his wife £75.10s. She then lived at Forcer View, Lhassa Street, Holyhead. Anne Phillips went on to live until she was 93, passing away in 1972. His brother, Rev. J T Phillips served as Chaplin to the 5th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment.

He transferred to the Holyhead LNWR service from Garston on 13 March 1915 and held the position of 3rd Engineer, having first entered the LNWR service on 7 July 1900. It is noted in his employment record that his family continued to receive his wages up to 10 February 1916, 3 months after his death.

Awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal, 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
