William Jones, Greaser

William Jones, Greaser, Mercantile Marine, SS Connemara, died on 3 November 1916, aged 58 due to a collision at sea.

Unmarried, he lived on board ship but was also recorded as living at 21 Wian Street, Holyhead. The funeral report in a local newspaper mentioned that his father was late of the inn, 'Ship and Castle', Boston Street. In 1861, aged 3, he lived with his family at the 'Duke of Montrose Inn' in Old Cross Street, Holyhead where His father, William, was the Innkeeper. His mother Catherine (34) (nee Williams?) originated from Amlwch. He had two brothers - Richard (5) and Joseph (1). In 1871 the family lived at 35 Baker Street. His father (48) was now widowed and employed as a Labourer. The children included William H Jones (13), Joseph Jones (11) Mary E Jones (9) and Annie Jones (7).

The 1915 Crew Lists for the LNWR record him born in 1858 and commencing employment with the company in July 1894. He is classed here as a Fireman.

His body was recovered for burial at Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead - Section 2, Grave 1503. The grave is unmarked.
