Big Idea:

How people use solution chemistry to solve problems.

Student Expectations:

Priority TEKS

I.6E Relate the structure of water to its function as a solvent & investigate the properties of solutions & factors affecting gas & solid solubility, including nature of solute, temperature, pressure, pH, & concentration.

I.6C Analyze physical & chemical properties of elements & compounds such as....

I.7F Research & describe the environmental & economic impact of the end products of chemical reactions such as those that may results in acid rain, degradation of water & air quality, & ozone depletion.

Student Learning Targets:

I will know how solutions work and why water is often used as a solvent.

      • I can identify the solute and solvent in any solution.
      • I can group mixtures as solutions, suspensions, and colloids
      • I know the difference between unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions.
      • I can set up an experiment to show how solubility is affected by various changes including particle size and temperature.
      • I know why water is “polar”.
      • I know why water has the title “universal solvent”.
      • I can explain why some solutions are electrolytes and some are non-electrolytes.
      • I can identify acids and bases.
      • I can compare and contrast acids & bases.
      • I can use pH to measure acid & base strength.
      • I can show how large, medium, and small particles dissolve at different rates.
      • I can use temperature changes and stirring to affect dissolving rate.
      • I can make or use a temperature-solubility graph to explain how solubility changes at different temperatures.
      • I can explain how pressure affects the solubility of gases using everyday examples such as cans of soda.
      • I can explain the term “like dissolves like”.
      • I can use the solubility rules to determine if a substance dissolves or forms a precipitate.

I will show or discuss how acid rain affects our environment.

      • I know how acid rain forms.
      • I can identify one example of the effects of acid rain in our environment
