Big Idea:

Generate equivalent expressions with variables and simplify using order of operations.

Student Expectations:

Priority TEKS

6.7(A) generate equivalent numerical expressions using order of operations, including whole number exponents;

6.7(D) generate equivalent expressions using the properties of operations: inverse, identity, commutative, associative, and distributive properties.

Focus TEKS

6.7(B) distinguish between expressions and equations verbally, numerically, and algebraically;

6.7(C) determine if two expressions are equivalent using concrete models, pictorial models, and algebraic representations;

Student Learning Targets:

  • I will create expression from real world situations
  • I will generate and model equivalent expressions
  • I will simplify expressions using the properties of operations and the order of operations.
  • I will write about how you can determine that two algebraic expressions are equivalent

Essential Questions:

  • How do exponents represent numbers?
  • How do you use order of operations to simplify expressions?
  • How do you model and generate equivalent expressions?
