Kindergarten Math Unit 1

Big Idea:

Students will count, write, and represent numbers 0-10. Students will quickly recognize a random set of objects (Subitizing) and will organize data into groups for graphing.

K.5 [Supporting] recite numbers up to at least 100 by ones and tens beginning with any given number (count orally to 10 by 1’s)

Student Learning Targets:

• I will count from 0-10 by saying each number out loud.
• I will count 20 bears with a partner out loud.
• I will write my numbers to 0-10 using lined paper.
• I will show the numbers 0-10 using manipulatives. (counters, linking cubes, etc.)
• I will recognize instantly the quantity of a small group of objects. (five frames, dice, fingers, etc.)
• I will show one to one correspondence by counting concrete objects.
• I will compose numbers 0-10; (put the number 8 together different ways), using counters.
• I will decompose numbers 0-10; (take the number 9 apart different ways), using counters.
• I will organize data into groups for graphing. (ex: How many letters are in your name? Are you a car rider or a bus rider?)

Essential Questions:

• How do you count and write ____ with words and numbers?
• How will being able to count well help you when you get older?
• How many objects are there? (using arranged objects on a ten frame; using objects presented randomly.)
• How can you sort objects into like categories?
• How many ways can you make the number 10? What different numbers can you use?
