Independent Reading

Big Idea:

  • Students will explore literature by selecting novels of their own choice.
  • Students learn to build interpretations and to analyze by writing about their reading.

Student Expectations:

Priority TEKS

SC 7 Informal/exploratory writing activities that enable students to discover what they think in the process of writing about their reading (such assignments could include annotation, free writing, keeping a reading journal, reaction/response papers, and/or dialectical notebooks).

Focus TEKS

SC 1 Study representative works such as those by authors cited in the AP English Course Description. Students study both British and American writers, as well as works written in several genres from the sixteenth century to contemporary times.

Ongoing TEKS

SC5 Students will write and rewrite timed, in-class response.

Learning Targets:

  • Read a diverse selection of works by authors cited in the AP English Course Description.
  • Create a reading journal that requires careful, deliberative reading.
  • Hone writing and analytical skills by responding to a multitude of thought-provoking questions about self-selected novels.
  • Trace the changes of a central character.
  • Discuss the effectiveness of the organization of ideas in the book.
  • Identify the questions an author try to answer through the moral dilemmas presented in a novel.
  • Evaluate how authors present enough evidence to support the main ideas in a novel.

  • How can independently reading a book improve your analytical skills?
  • How does increasing the volume of text read improve comprehension and stamina?
