2nd Grade Science Unit 2
Classifying Matter
15 Instructional Days - 1st 6 Weeks
Hyperlinks are for content teachers
Big Idea:
Describe different objects based on their physical properties and determine if objects are a solid or liquid.
Student Expectations:
Priority TEKS
2.5(A) classify matter by physical properties, including shape, relative mass, relative temperature, texture, flexibility, and whether material is a solid or liquid
Ongoing TEKS
2.1(A) [Tools to Know] Identify and demonstrate safe practices as described in the Texas Safety Standards during classroom and outdoor investigations, including wearing safety goggles, washing hands, and using materials appropriately.
2.4(A) [Tools to Know] Collect, record, and compare information using tools, including computers, magnets.
2.2(D) [Ways to Show] Record and organize data using pictures, numbers, and words;
2.2(E) [Ways to Show] communicate observations and justify explanations using student-generated data from simple descriptive investigations; and
2.2(F) [Ways to Show] compare results of investigations with what students and scientists know about the world.
Student Learning Targets:
- I will classify solid and liquid matter by their physical properties.
- I will make observations and collect data using science tools to describe the physical properties of matter.
- I will write my classroom observations about physical properties.
Essential Questions:
- How do scientists classify matter?
