Integrated Physics and Chemistry Unit 4
Chemical Changes in Matter
8 Instructional Days - 2nd 6 Weeks
Hyperlinks are for content teachers
Big Idea:
How chemical reactions can produce products and energy.
Student Expectations:
Priority TEKS
I.7A Investigate changes of state as it relates to the arrangement of particles of matter & energy transfer.
I.7B Recognize that chemical changes can occur when substances react to form different substances & that these interactions are largely determined by the valence electrons.
I.7C Demonstrate that mass is conserved when substances undergo chemical change & that the number & kind of atoms are the same in reactants or products.
I.7D Analyze energy changes that accompany chemical reactions such as those occurring in heat packs, cold, packs, & glow sticks, & classify them as exothermic or endothermic reactions.
I.7F Research & describe the environmental & economic impact of the end products of chemical reactions such as those that may result in acid rain, degradation of water & air quality, & ozone depletion.
Student Learning Targets:
I will know why hot packs, cold packs, glow sticks, and other chemical reactions work.
- I can use lab results to decide if a chemical reaction is endothermic or exothermic.
- I can look at a chemical reaction and classify it as: addition, combustion, decomposition, double-displacement, or single-displacement and analyze each for energy changes.
I will know how balanced chemical reactions make products.
- I can explain the differences between physical changes & chemical changes.
- I can distinguish between physical & chemical changes when substances are reacted.
- I can explain how atoms rearrange to form new substances.
- I can show that a chemical reaction follows the law of conservation of mass.
- I can balance a chemical equation.
- I can use examples from everyday life to explain the difference between physical and chemical changes.
- I can predict how much product a chemical reaction will make.
I will identify the types of chemical reactions and discuss environmental impacts.
- I can predict products of simple reactions.
- I can identify the types of chemical reactions and discuss environmental impacts.
- I can find information on how a chemical or reaction product impacts the environment
