Measurement - Volume and Surface Area

17 Instructional Days - 5th 6 Weeks

Hyperlinks are for content teachers

Big Idea:

Find the volume of cylinders, cones and spheres and find the lateral and total surface area of prisms and cylinders.

Student Expectations:

Priority TEKS

8.7(A) [Readiness] Solve problems involving the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres.

8.7(B) [Readiness] Use previous knowledge of surface area to make connections to the formulas for lateral and total surface area and determine solutions for problems involving rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and cylinders.

Focus TEKS

8.6(A) [Supporting] Describe the volume formula V=Bh of a cylinder in terms of its base area and its height.

8.6(B) [Supporting] Model the relationship between the volume of a cylinder and a cone having both congruent bases and heights and connect that relationship to the formulas.

Student Learning Targets:

  • I will find volume of cylinders, cones and spheres.
  • I will find lateral and total surface area of prisms and cylinders.
  • I will write explaining the similarities and differences of volume and surface area involving cylinders and cones.

Essential Questions:

  • What is the relationship between the volume of a cylinder and cone and how can this relate to a real-world application?
