Hyperlinks are for content teachers

Big Idea:

Write, graph, and interpret exponential functions by analyzing growth and decay functions and identifying key features of graphs.

Student Expectations:

Priority TEKS

A.9(C) [Readiness] write exponential functions in the form f(x) = abx (where b is a rational number) to describe problems arising from mathematical and real-world situations, including growth and decay

Focus TEKS

A.9(A) [Supporting] determine the domain and range of exponential functions of the form f(x) = abx and represent the domain and range using inequalities

A.9(B) [Supporting] interpret the meaning of the values of a and b in exponential functions of the form f(x) = abx in real-world problems

A.9(D) [Readiness] graph exponential functions that model growth and decay and identify key features, including y-intercept and asymptote, in mathematical and real-world problems

A.9(E) [Supporting] write, using technology, exponential functions that provide a reasonable fit to data and make predictions for real-world problems

Student Learning Targets:

  • I will graph and analyze exponential growth and decay functions
  • I will write exponential functions to represent growth and decay functions
  • I will describe characteristics of exponential growth and decay functions
  • I will identify and describe key features of graphs of exponential functions
  • I will compare graphs of exponential and linear functions
  • I will create an exponential function to model compound interest and population data

Essential Questions:

  • How do exponential functions compare to linear functions?
  • How are exponential functions useful in looking at data in the real world?
