Mole Concept

12 Instructional Days - 4th 6 Weeks

Hyperlinks are for content teachers

Big Idea:

Develop an understanding of Avogadro’s number and how to apply it to atoms, formula units, and molecules.

Student Expectations:

Priority TEKS

C.8(A) define and use the concept of a mole;

C.8(B) calculate the number of atoms or molecules in a sample of material using Avogadro's number

Focus TEKS

C.8(C) calculate percent composition of compounds

C.8(D) differentiate between empirical and molecular formulas;

Ongoing TEKS

C.7(A) name ionic compounds containing main group or transition metals, covalent compounds, acids, and bases, using International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) nomenclature rules

C.7(B) write the chemical formulas of ionic compounds containing representative elements, transition metals and common polyatomic ions, covalent compounds, and acids, bases;

8.5(C) interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table, including groups and periods, to explain how properties are used to classify elements

C.3(C) draw inferences based on data related to promotional materials for products and services

Student Learning Targets:

  • I will calculate formula weight, molecular weight, and molar mass of an element or a compound.
  • I will describe how a mole used in chemistry and use it when converting between mass and representative particles.
  • I will convert chemical quantities between the mass, the moles and the number of representative particles of an element or compound.
  • I will determine the empirical and molecular formula from the percent composition of a compound.
  • I will calculate empirical and molecular formulas.
  • I will calculate percent composition given a chemical formula.

Essential Questions:

  • How do scientists represent and calculate quantities and proportions of chemicals that are relevant to lab investigations?
