Developing Readers and Writers Using Informational (Nonfiction) Texts

Big Idea:

  • Reading Comprehension and Strategies: Locating facts and details in nonfiction texts.
  • Writing and Grammar: Legibly writing four complete exclamatory sentences with correct punctuation.
  • Phonics: Using knowledge of syllables, magic e, and long and short vowels to read and write.

Reading

1.4 - Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking -- fluency. The student reads grade-level text with fluency and comprehension. The student is expected to use appropriate fluency (rate, accuracy, and prosody) when reading grade-level text.

1.9(D)(ii) - The student is expected to: (D) recognize characteristics and structures of informational text, including: (ii) features and simple graphics to locate or gain information.

1.2(A)iii The student develops word structure knowledge through phonological awareness, print concepts, phonics, and morphology to communicate, decode, and spell. The student is expected to: (iii) distinguishing between long and short vowel sounds in one-syllable words

Writing

1.11(D) - The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions. The student is expected to (D) edit drafts using standard English conventions, including: (viii) capitalization for the beginning of sentences and the pronoun “I”; (ix) punctuation marks at the end of declarative, exclamatory, and interrogative sentences

Phonics

1.2(B)(iii) - The student is expected to: (B) demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge by: (iii) decoding words with closed syllables; open syllables: VCe syllables; vowel teams, including vowel digraphs and diphthongs; and r-controlled syllables.
