Geometric Formulas and Volume
5 Instructional Days - 4th 6 Weeks
Hyperlinks are for content teachers
Big Idea:
Use the appropriate formula to find area, perimeter, and volume.
Student Expectations:
Priority TEKS
5.4(H) [Readiness] Represent and solve problems related to perimeter and/or area and related to volume.
Focus TEKS
5.4(G) [Readiness] Use concrete objects and pictorial models to develop the formulas for the volume of a rectangular prism, including the special form for a cube (V=l x w x h, V=sxsxs and V=Bh)
5.6(A) [Supporting] Recognize a cube with side length of one unit as a unit cube having one cubic unit of volume and the volume of a three-dimensional figure as the number of unit cubes needed to fill it with no gaps or overlaps if possible.
5.6(B) [Supporting] Determine the volume of a rectangular prism with whole number side lengths in problems related to the number of layers times the number of unit cubes in the area of the base.
Ongoing TEKS
5.4(B) [Readiness] Represent and solve multi-step problems involving the four operations with whole numbers using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.
Student Learning Targets:
- I will identify that a word problem is multi-step and determine what those steps are.
- I will be able to find the correct formula on your reference sheet to help solve the problems.
- I will apply knowledge of PEMDAS and solve for the unknown quantity.
- I will use formulas for area, perimeter, and volume correctly to help solve for the unknown quantity.
- I will analyze a rectangular prism by using our knowledge of unit cubes to help find the volume.
- I will write a real world situation problem with a given equation.
Essential Questions:
- What is a formula?
- How can we use a formula correctly to find the area and perimeter of shapes?
- How can we use a formula correctly to find the volume of a rectangular prism and cubes?
- How can you use formulas to solve problems about area, perimeter, and volume?
- What is a unit cube and how can you use it to build a solid figure?
- How can our knowledge of a unit cube help us find the volume of a rectangular prism?
