Kinning is a long running joke that appears semi-frequently in the lab. It should be known that as a disclaimer that none of us are serious kinnies and that these jokes are just that, nothing more.
Kin (noun) is a person and/or persons that are connected through blood or ancestry, thought of to be as one's relatives¹. The term was derived from a combination of the Old English cynn ("family; race; kind, sort, rank; nature") and the Dutch kunne ("sex, gender;"), as well as a variety of other Germanic languages, all relating to the idea of "kind" or "child"². Synonyms include: blood, clan, family, folks, house, kindred, kinfolk (or kinfolks), kinsfolk, line, lineage, people, race, stock, tribe¹. Kinship (noun) refers to the state of being kin with a person, i.e. a relationship, and such rich history can be traced all the way back to the beginning of mankind, predating even the Neolithic Revolution when humans still led a nomadic hunterer-gatherer lifestyle⁴.
But of course, that's not what we're talking about.
Kinning, as referred to in an internet culture sense, means to heavily relate to or believe that one is a certain character due to either personality, trauma, looks, or a combination of the three⁵. It can be used as a coping mechanism, but that doesn't always have to be the case⁶. If you "kin" a character, you feel connected or relate to them, and some "kinnies" believe that they really are that character, engaging with others in a sort of roleplay sense as that character. Although kinning can be a coping mechanism that people use, there's also a concern with certain kinnies (for example, a genuine Daud kinnie would raise several questions, taking into consideration that Daud is an assassin who has committed murder). There's a built up negative stigma that arose from the perception of kinnies being too serious about their roles or too aggressive to others in the community, either because of their kin or because another person is sharing their kin (hence the phrase "no doubles," referring to the elimination of other people who share a kin in order to only have one).
Due to the nature of kinning as a word that generally exists outside of the internet, there is no way to trace the lab history of this word and its use. Lucky me doesn't have to backread through millions of messages.
Possibly to your surprise, the Pendlekin jokes predates me (Custy), when on March 12th, 2020, user Tim said that "so i got my hair cut yesterday right. and i rly like how it looks. however i put my bangs up on my head and i look like pendleton," before posting a picture of him holding his hair back, showing off what subjectively could be seen as a large forehead⁷. Hydria then added the role "Pendlekin" to Tim's roles. The joke never really went beyond that besides a few offhand mentions.
No exact point can be traced, but the more common idea of a "Pendlekinnie" is derived by Custy's very own existence. The nickname "Custy" alone is derived from "Custard", which in turn is derived from Custis Pendleton. The origin from "Custard" came from a conversation in April 29th, 2020, where Infinite thought that Custis's name was actually Custard⁸. Custy then changed their nickname to "Lord Custard Pendleton." The name "Custy Cust" didn't arrive until the next day (April 30th) when user Julz referred to Custy as such, to which the nickname has been around since⁹. Due to the nature of the name, as well as the common use of a Custis icon, Custy has come to be known as the resident Pendlekinnie. I am once again emphasizing that I am not an actual Pendlekinnie.
Daud kinning jokes have been running for a long while, first appearances also being of unknown origins. From what can be tracked and perceived, rapid use started around late July 2020, when user Edge started calling various things as "Daud kin." This trendy comment soon caught on like wildfire, with Daud being the most commonly thrown about kin on the server.
Common "Daud kin" traits or actions include:
Killing someone
Bonus points if it's the Empress/some other royalty figure
Carrying and/or yearning for a knife
Demonstrating any sort of combat abilities, particularly with a sword
Committing any sort of criminal activity
Showing regret for your actions
Having enormous honkabaloogas, I mean large bonkertonkers (huge tits, to put it bluntly)
Doing anything related to furries
Wolves in particular can garner Daud kin status
Being called or self assigning as "wide" (having wide shoulders, which is also associated with Daud)
Being called or claim to be short (a common headcanon is that Daud is 166cm (~5'5 feet)
Claiming to have a sizable amount of muscle/claim that you are "jacked"
A couple of first examples shouted out by Edge in July and August 2020.
On the flip side of things, a while ago the lab also came up with a kinlist for Daud as well. During the same date as Hiraud's conception (August 30th, 2020), the lab also started coming up with the list, starting with Lunar laying down the base kinlist¹⁰ of:
Sans (Undertale, 2015)
Nagito Komaeda (Danganronpa Series)
The Joker (Batman Series)
Rick Sanchez (Rick and Morty, 2013-Present)
And I quote, "one of the wolves from Alpha and Omega" (Alpha and Omega, 2010)
Some additions were made as well in offhanded comments/jokes¹¹.
"that radio demon from Hazmat Hotel" in reference to Alistor from H*zbin Hotel (2019, censored for your convenience)
Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan, 2009-Present, unfortunately)
Light Yagami (Death Note, 2003-2006)
Newer kins appeared around September 4th¹².
Miles Edgeworth (Ace Attorney Series)
Kylo Ren (Star Wars Series)
