But ye Custis is Smart™ and I think was smart for a very long time and suffered a lot of Gifted Child Problems as a kid and stuff.

Like perfectionism and stuff like that not to project but <3. you lose a lot of faith in humanity and yourself, because being a Gifted Child just takes pieces of you out. like carving inside a watermelon.

Just throughout all his life he's just so constantly busy, first with doing schoolwork that's 2 grades above his age level, and later with all the paperwork that he has to take care of for the family and stuff. His mind is never fully at peace, at constant alert for the next due date, he can never relax it's constantly on work mode. It's the reason he drinks. It's the reason why he visits the Cat. The man is just trying to find any form of relief or rest wherever he can.
