Description:
Based off the fact that there's a secret attic between Waverly and Esma's rooms, the sisters used to use the attic as a secret clubhouse when they were kids.
I’m imagining all the sisters can’t sleep, maybe it’s the night before a holiday and they all just sit up there and talk about how excited they are for gifts and fireworks and the party
They first started using it when Esma was asked to get something from the attic, and she thought it would be a fun spot for them to get together. At first it was old and dusty, random furniture everywhere with only a small bit of empty space, but damn if it wasn't secret and fun to sneak into. They gradually bring more and more stuff in, blankets and pillows to make a whole fortress in there.
I think Esma particularly loved that little attic space, since it was quaint and modest, something that WASN'T all extravagant or golden or pretty like the rest of the mansion. It was also always a place that united them, even as they started growing into teenagers and later adults. Even when they sort of strayed onto different paths, they would still meet in the attic, it was their core family thing, and I think Esma really enjoyed that sense of family while it lasted. As they started drifting further apart and the sisters started growing contempt for each other, they stopped sneaking up there. They were getting too old for "child's play" (as Waverly called it) and that sort of became a downer for Esma :(
The first time the twins get to see the attic was on another visit to the mansion, they were kids and just playing around, when Morgan pulled on the attic door in curiosity and Custis kept insisting on going in. First off I think Morgan also enjoys the vibes of the attic because of the secrecy. His imagination makes up all sorts of crazy stories and scenarios around it. The five of them (sometimes four when Lydia has to do music lessons) just vibe in there and play around like kids, it was sort of an escape from having to be aristocrats, they just got to be regular kids in there. I think one time near present day (aka like before the events of dh1) while the twins were visiting during a party and were still friends at the time, Esma ends up missing. Waverly and Lydia have been looking around the mansion for an hour and couldn't find her. Wave asks the twins for help before Morgan excuses himself upstairs, as he knows exactly where she went. He pulls on the attic door and climbs up from the bed, a little stiff but he's still got it. It's a bit difficult for him to crawl through, but he finds Esma just lying down on the floor of the attic, just sort of having a melancholy moment. "I knew I'd find you up here." The attic just holds so much nostalgia for Esma, and her and Morgan share a drink up there, maybe just lying down staring at the ceiling for a bit, and recall fun memories before Custis and Wave find them again.
